With just a touch, the Tag Reader will read, sing, and ask questions to your child. |
Kids can select from a growing library of interactive books and store them on the reader. | Easy for Children to Use The durable Tag Reader is cleverly shaped like a pen, with the optical reader at the tip. It's easy for children to operate independently and the pen fits well into small fingers. The lightweight Reader has a built-in speaker in the front for clear sound with volume control buttons located below the speaker. The adjustable volume ranges from very soft to loud. Your child can also use the Reader with headphones (not included). An adult can help pry open the flaps that hide the headphone plug and USB port. There's also a handy audio book feature -- perfect for traveling -- that plays aloud an entire story. The battery is securely placed behind a screw-locked compartment for safety. Advice to parents: the optical reader is exposed at the tip of the Reader so be sure to keep liquids away from it. Amazing Response with Every Touch Your child will instantly gravitate to the entertaining, interactive way the Tag Reading System opens up the world of books. She can touch virtually anywhere on the special Tag Activity Storybook and the Reader will respond with music, sound effects, amusing phrases, and other fun activities related to the book. There are special symbols placed throughout the pages that cause the Reader to read the entire page, play a game, prompt children to answer "yes" or "no" questions, repeat a phrase, or simply stop the Reader from speaking. When children want to read on their own but need just a little help, simply pointing to a word on the page will let them hear just that word. This feature is perfect for children that are just developing their reading skills but get frustrated when faced with a challenging word. The Reading System will help them gain confidence and enjoy reading. Each TAG Storybook features games and activities that will help develop age-appropriate skills such as building vocabulary, reading comprehension, and other core reading skills. Store up to 10 Books The sample full-size book comes conveniently pre-loaded onto the Tag Reader. Additionally, 10 books can be loaded onto the Reader giving children the opportunity to switch back and forth between different books with ease. The Tag Reading system comes with a LeapFrog Connect CD and the Reader can easily connect to a computer with the USB cable (included). There are currently over 30 books in the Tag Reading System library and it will continue to grow as LeapFrog constantly adds new books. Books range from classic children's books to contemporary, cartoon-based adventures, so there's something for every child. They also range in varying reading and skill levels allowing parents to tailor the books to their child's individual needs. What's in the Box One Tag Reader, one full-size Tag Activity Storybook, USB Cable, LeapFrog Connect CD, 2 "AAA" batteries.

Good for kids to kick off self-reading, but kids may become reliant on the Tag than self-reading September 3, 2010 Lim Boon Kiat (MSP, MN, USA/Singapore) Bought this as a birthday gift for my nephew. He likes it, but maybe because of his personality and limited interest in reading, he played with it only for a day. Good for kids to pick up reasoning with the games/questions on the pages. A bit slow when installing the sound files because sound files are being downloaded realtime and installed. Don't quite like that it requires downloading. Have to try it out on my daughter to see if it would work better since she likes reading much more than her cousin. Then I will update.
Simple, Tough, and Educational August 5, 2010 Mac Riddel (Minneapolis, MN) We originally purchased the Tag Junior for our son's 3rd birthday, but after some deliberation, returned it and bought a Tag reader instead. There were less books for the Junior and I heard that the regular Tag reader can also use the Junior books if we so choose.
At first our son wasn't too interested in the books, but after a few months he really started getting into it and can literally read all of the books himself. Ok, maybe he can't "read" yet, but these are basically audiobooks accompanying the regular book. Each book gives an added bonus of a few pages of games to help the kids learn a bit more on the words introduced throughout the book.
We've had no technical issues at all with setting up any Tag book or the Tag reader itself. Very simple process. Just connect the Tag reader to a computer w/ the supplied usb cord, install the Tag reader software (1-time install) and choose the books that you own. They'll install the audio onto the reader and you're set!
The books themselves can be expensive, but I've seen sales online and locally where they can be found for a good $4-$5 off, so we watch for those.
Really bad idea July 12, 2010 Grandma I purchased this toy for my granddaughter at christmas. I beleived the toy would encourage her to read since she loves books. All this toy has done is discourage her love of reading. She refuses to take the toy out of her backpack. She has told me that the toy never works right and does not read the books. I had her bring the toy to me last week. I tried to use the systtem and could not get it to work. I have contacted Leapfrog regarding the pen. I was told to clean the lens. I did as instructed but the pen does not work. Numerous people are complaining about the same thing. I have asked Leapfrog for a refund of my money and I am waiting for their reply.
Despite abuse - Tag Pen still working! May 4, 2010 Zoe Banchieri (Union City, CA) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I got this for my daughter for Christmas and had grandparents get a bunch of books to go with it. She absolutely loves it. We lost the pen at one point and when it was found I handed it to her, not realizing she was about to explode with the stomach flu, and she barfed all over it. It still worked fine. Last week she dropped it in the toilet. I dried it out in the sun and it still works. Crazy! At this point, if it broke, I would replace it because she completely loves it. I do have a new Mac which isn't partitioned, just using as it is out of box and it works fine with downloading the books. You can put books on the pen prior to purchase so if you know you will likely be getting a book, put it on so you don't have to later. Also the pen tells you the batteries are running out long before they really run out.
not what i expected May 4, 2010 L. markle 1 out of 7 found this review helpful
i bought this beacause my son loves anything electronic and is starting to read. but i would not have bought it if i had known that the books had little games in them. what a waste of my time and money! who ever decided to add games was an idiot! because there are games my son wanted nothing to do with the reading part. i sure thought it was called tag reading system, not tag game system. if i wanted games i would have bought something else. i am sending it back
